Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ begins with repentance and faith when we acknowledge our sinfulness and our need for God’s forgiveness and salvation. We must believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again from the dead.
We must confess him as our Lord and Savior and commit to follow him for the rest of our lives. John wrote, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). We must repent of our sins. Jesus said, “No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3). We must submit to the power of God in baptism for the forgiveness of our sins. Peter says, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).
Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ also involves obedience and transformation. We must obey God’s commands and teachings as revealed in the Bible. We must allow the Holy Spirit to renew our minds and change our hearts to conform to God’s will. We must also practice spiritual disciplines such as prayer, worship, fasting, Bible study, and fellowship. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). And Paul wrote, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). And James wrote, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22).
Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ also requires service and mission. We must use our gifts and talents to serve God and others in the church and in the world. We must also share the gospel with those who do not know Christ and help them become his disciples as well. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). And Paul wrote, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). And Matthew wrote, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).
Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ is not easy, but it is rewarding. It is the most meaningful and fulfilling way to live. It is also the best way to honor God and glorify him with our lives.
