Jesus understands our pain

Jesus is deeply moved again when he reaches the tomb. He knows what he will do for Lazarus, yet still feels the family’s sorrow. Jeff distinguishes this sign from a promise that loved ones will immediately return to us; it points toward the lasting life God has promised.

Believe and move the stone

Martha objects that Lazarus has been dead four days. Jesus reminds her of his promise that she will see God’s glory if she believes. The sermon connects this with walking by faith and acting on what Christ has said, even before we see how the story will end.

Remember what is settled

Jesus thanks the Father for having heard him before Lazarus appears. Jeff urges the church to pray with confidence in God’s love and promises. Christ’s death and resurrection assure his people of his care, and his promise to prepare a place for them gives hope while they face present struggles.

He calls his sheep by name

Jesus calls Lazarus by name. Drawing on the Good Shepherd imagery in John 10, Jeff emphasizes a personal relationship with the Savior who knows his sheep. Romans 6:4 connects this call to walking in newness of life.

Help one another become free

Jesus tells those nearby to unbind Lazarus and let him go. He does what only he can do, then gives others a part in helping. The sermon calls the church to stand beside people who are still hurting, praying for them, encouraging them, and helping them move forward.

Reflection and invitation

What step of faith do I need to take? Who needs me to walk beside them? Trust what Christ has promised and help someone else find freedom from the struggles that bind them. The recording ends with an invitation to come for help and encouragement.
