Class overview

The first class on Hosea introduces the prophet’s costly calling. Jeff asks the class to consider the public weight of Hosea’s marriage and family, the pain conveyed by God’s description of Israel’s unfaithfulness, and the obedience expressed in Hosea 1:3: ‘So he went.’

A message Hosea had to live

Jeff begins with the way news and reputations travel in a small community. Hosea’s calling would be visible before he preached a word. God told him to marry Gomer, knowing the relationship would bring heartbreak and public questions. His family would carry the consequences as well. The class discusses the children’s names and the lasting burden that a name or reputation can place on a person.

Hosea’s experience served as an object lesson about Israel. Jeff points to the end of verse 2, where the land’s unfaithfulness is tied to forsaking the Lord. He stresses the human cost of this instruction rather than treating Hosea and his family as distant figures in a story.

The hurt behind Israel’s unfaithfulness

The class considers why God uses such direct language. Jeff contrasts the way a judge responds to a broken rule with the way a spouse feels betrayal. The marriage image makes Israel’s turning away from God personal. In Jeff’s reading, Hosea would understand that hurt firsthand as he spoke to the nation.

Obedience in the choices before us

Near the end, Jeff turns from Hosea’s extraordinary calling to ordinary decisions to obey God. The choice may be a private gift, a needed conversation, or another act no one else sees. He asks the class to consider whether the obedience they resist is as overwhelming as it first feels. Hosea’s response in verse 3 closes the lesson and sets up the next class.

Reflection and application

How does Hosea’s story change the way you hear God’s description of unfaithfulness? Consider one act of obedience you have been delaying. What would it mean to take that step faithfully, even if no one else sees it?
