What is the purpose of Judgment Day for those who belong to Christ? This class considers the great white throne, the opened books, and the Book of Life in Revelation 20. Jeff Arnette connects the certainty of judgment with the assurance of forgiveness and the promise that there is no condemnation for those in Christ.
The throne and the opened books
The great white throne points to God’s holiness and final authority. No status, wealth, or earthly importance exempts anyone from standing before him. The class compares the scene with Daniel 7 and discusses the books as a record of deeds, alongside the Book of Life as the record of the redeemed.
Forgiveness and confidence in Christ
Jeff argues that forgiven sins will not be held against the redeemed at judgment. He connects this hope with Romans 8:1 and the continuing cleansing described in 1 John 1:7. Salvation rests on Christ rather than on good deeds outweighing bad deeds. The discussion acknowledges unanswered questions about the details of judgment while emphasizing the believer’s hope.
Continuing to walk in the light
Assurance does not remove the call to faithfulness. The class stresses continuing to follow Christ, responding to his correction, and resisting the attitude that obedience no longer matters. Jeff distinguishes imperfect people who keep walking in the light from a deliberate choice to walk away from Christ. Good works express faith; they cannot replace the Savior.
