Believe it or not he’s not there to meet your needs. Jesus does that. They are there as a shepherd to watch over the entire flock and to see that healthy food is available and safe procedures are in place. They are there to help you be holy, not happy.

The bittersweet image of Jesus as the “suffering servant” is most beautifully and concisely portrayed in Isaiah 53. It is this Bible chapter that has been so “titled” because the text foretells of God’s “righteous servant” (53:11) who would endure unthinkable suffering “for our iniquities” (53:4). Both letters were written by the apostle John who is called “the elder” (v. 3). The sense of appreciation for their “children walking in truth” (vv. 3-4) also resonates in both letters. And, of course, both letters include warnings against church leaders who would deceive and abuse the church members.
