Read: Proverbs 8–11
Highlights:
The creation activities of Jesus are intermingled with the voice of wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:24, “Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God”; Colossians 2:3, “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge”). We are told to praise wisdom and avoid folly.
Today’s Passage: Proverbs 9:10–11 (ESV)
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life.”
Many hear the phrase “fear of the Lord” and have no idea what it truly means. Some may even wonder if they are supposed to be afraid of God.
The truth is, unbelievers should fear for their souls. If they choose to reject Jesus, they will face the judgment of God. As Jesus said, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). When this life ends, so do the opportunities to be saved.
Believers should fear God too, but for a different reason. We do not fear judgment or condemnation. Instead, our fear of the Lord is rooted in reverence and awe. Hebrews 12:28 says, “Let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”
Sadly, many today live without any fear or respect for the Lord. They act as though they will live forever and never be held accountable. Some are atheists or agnostics, but the result is the same. More troubling are those who claim to follow Christ but live like the world. Their choices show a lack of true belief.
There is great wisdom in fearing the Lord and walking in His ways. It draws us closer to Him and helps us grow spiritually. The Holy Spirit is free to work in our lives, giving us wisdom and discernment (Hebrews 5:14).
This should motivate us to dig deeper into God’s Word and become lifelong students of it. This is not only wise but also God’s will for us. The more we seek Him, the more wisdom and understanding we gain.
Proverbs 9:11 promises that “by me your days will be multiplied.” This isn’t just about adding years to our lives—it’s about living a fuller, more meaningful life. That kind of life is available to anyone who follows Jesus in faithful obedience (Acts 2:28).
