Read: Proverbs 4–7

How many times have we heard someone ask, “If you knew then what you know now, would you change anything?” Proverbs tells us that the instructions of a father (4:1) can spare us heartache and misery. We could avoid the pitfalls of a wicked life, bad company, immorality, and temptation if we learned from wisdom. Don’t miss the right way to live (4:18, 20–22). Learn the seven things God hates (6:16–19). Once again, Proverbs shows us the way of the simple and how it leads to their downfall (7:7, 24–27).

Today’s passage: Proverbs 4:25–27.

When we wander off the Lord’s path, we are headed for certain trouble. This is exactly what Proverbs warns us about. That’s why we must apply these verses to our lives. There is wisdom in these words. God teaches us to pay attention to the path we choose to walk. This assumes we are already walking on the Lord’s path. If we follow His way, He will make our path clear and better (Luke 3:5).

Proverbs warns us not to walk on the path of evil. We must watch our steps and follow the way the Lord shows us. Many times, we know the path God wants us to walk, but we don’t want to do it (James 4:17).

The enemy will always try to pressure us, and if that doesn’t work, he will tempt us to leave the Lord’s path. He does this in many different ways. Most often, he uses the very things we are already struggling to avoid. He will use every tool or weapon at his disposal to lead us astray (1 John 2:16; 1 Peter 5:8).

Instead of choosing the lesser of two evils, we must seek the path God has already made clear. There is always a right choice to make. It might not feel like a good choice, but that’s okay as long as it’s the Lord’s choice.

Where do we find the answers and direction to make the right choice? We find it in God’s Word, through prayer, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and through the wisdom of godly people. This is the only sure way to know the Lord’s path (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Thought for today:

Godly wisdom gives us the understanding and strength to live well and overcome temptation (Proverbs 4:11–13).
