Read: Psalm 120–131
Today’s Passage: Psalm 121:1–2
Today’s reading comes from a section of the Psalms referred to as Hallel Psalms. The Hallel Psalms were sung by God’s people as they ascended to Jerusalem for worship during the great feasts. These songs were more than tradition—they were one step as they Prepared for worship. Singing them helped turn their hearts and minds toward the Lord. Among these rich songs of faith, certain verses stand out with special encouragement: Psalm 121:1, 122:6, 125:2, 126:6, and 131:3. They speak of God’s presence, His protection, and His faithfulness.
How often are we surrounded by trouble on every side? It happens more than we’d like to admit. The enemy looks for every opportunity to attack. Sometimes we’re overwhelmed—worn down by trials, tempted to give up, or feeling like we’re failing. And at times, the most painful part is the feeling that we’re alone in the struggle. But that’s a lie. Scripture reminds us otherwise. Psalm 37:25 says, “I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken.” And Psalm 34:9 assures us that “those who fear him have no lack.” Our God is faithful. He does not abandon His people.
The psalmist gives us a powerful reminder: the key to enduring difficult seasons is knowing that we never face them alone. When life gets heavy and circumstances close in, we must remember where our help comes from. Our strength isn’t in ourselves. We’re not called to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. Our help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He’s the Creator, not limited by anything. The very one who spoke the universe into existence watches over us.
So, what do we do? We lift our eyes. We pray. We trust. We remember that victory doesn’t depend on us, it depends on Him. And He has already secured it. Jesus won that victory on the cross and defeated sin and death (Hebrews 12:25). Now, our role is to trust in His strength. That doesn’t mean we won’t still fight, but it does mean the outcome is already settled. Romans 8:37 says, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
God is our defender. Over and over, the Psalms call Him our refuge, strong tower, rock, and protector. Each word paints a picture of safety and strength. We are not alone, and we are not defenseless. When we cry out to Him, He hears.
Psalm 121 closes with this reminder: the God who made heaven and earth is our helper. Romans 8:31 asks, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” And the answer is clear—no one. The enemy is already defeated. 1 John 5:4 and 2 Timothy 4:18 confirm that victory belongs to those who trust Him. He is our help, always.
