In the busyness of life, abiding in Christ is difficult. Yet, its important to our faith and a deeper relationship with Jesus. Let’s explore what it means to abide in Christ and how this connection shapes our lives.
A New Identity in Christ
When we choose to abide in Christ, we embrace a new identity. Paul reminds us in Gal. 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” This reminds us to put to death our old selves and be reborn in Christ.
Living as New Creations
Abiding in Christ means living as a creation. As 2 Cor. 5:17 states, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” This is not simply an internal change but an expression of Jesus’ love and grace in our lives.
Walking in Him
Paul says in Col. 2:6, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him.” Abiding in Christ is an ongoing journey requiring a daily commitment in our walk with Him. This journey is not about perfection but a constant walk.
Unity with Christ and the Church
This extends to our connection with the church. In Eph. 1:22-23, we read, “And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Abiding in Christ means being an active part of His body, the Church. Through the church we are supported through worship, fellowship, and service.
The Call to Unity and Peace
Jesus’ prayer in John 17:20-21 speaks about this. He said, “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.” Abiding in Christ fosters unity, transcends differences, and creates peace.
Walking Worthy of Our Calling
Lastly, Paul says in Ephesians 4:1-3, “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Abiding in Christ calls us to humility, gentleness, patience, and love, striving for unity and peace in our lives.
In conclusion, abiding in Christ is a journey of transformation and unity. It shapes our identity, influences our actions, and binds us together as one body. Let us commit to this journey, drawing closer to Him and reflecting on His love in our daily lives.
