Christian discipleship is the process of following Jesus Christ and becoming more like him in every aspect of life. It is not a one-time decision, but a lifelong journey of learning, growing, serving, and sharing the gospel with others.
Consider just two passages on the heart of discipleship.
- Luke 6:40 “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.”
- Matthew 10:25 “It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master… “
Discipleship is important because it is God’s will for every believer.
Jesus commanded his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). He also said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). The apostle Paul wrote, “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29). And Peter exhorted, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).
Discipleship is important because it is the way we experience the fullness of life that God has for us.
As we grow in our relationship with God, we discover our true identity, purpose, and destiny. We also enjoy the fellowship of other believers who encourage us, challenge us, and support us in our walk with God. We also become more effective witnesses of God’s love and grace to a world that desperately needs him. Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). And John wrote, “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3).
